“I AM Woman!”, 24”x24”, was inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem “Phenomenal Woman

My love affair with poetry has become a threesome.

This is a new painting from my series “Poems in Color”.

A poem catches my heart and pulls me to translate it to color until it becomes a painting.

This is how it happens: I begin with meditating on the emotions evoked by the poem until I see them in color, then I create a clay monoprint on geotextile, I mount it on a board and begin adding mixed-media - collage, assemblage, oil pastels, chalk, paintsticks, and inks, to name but a few. This process is emotional, spiritual, mental and physical. Long and demanding. And I love every single moment of it!

For the last few months I’ve been working with Art21 a wonderful foundry in Zapopan, Guadalajara, MX. I’m learning so much from these generous professionals. This is the small indoor studio where they work on Polymer pieces.
How wonderful it is when a collector sends me a photo of my art in their new home!
In sculpting I approach every medium as a carver uncovering what is within the material and myself. In stone I use chisels, mallets, grinding and cutting wheels; in clay - knives, cutting wire, and wooden blocks.
I’m introducing some new work in my series Poems in Color. Come read about it!
